Position Introduction:

The Dodge Family College of Arts & Sciences (DFCAS) is the largest college at the University of Oklahoma. Its departments, schools, and programs each maintain their own website, and those sites are the first place prospective students, current students, and visitors go to learn about a department. Most departments update their sites on top of other duties. DFCAS is seeking two students to serve as Web and Digital Experience Interns for one full year, January through December 2027, including summer. Each intern is the web contact for the departments in two of the college's four academic divisions: one intern works with Natural Sciences and Professional Programs, and the other works with Humanities (including the Boren School) and Social Sciences. Interns also help build and maintain the DFCAS Digital Resource Hub. Interns report to the DFCAS Director of IT and work as part of the DFCAS Intern Program alongside the college's AI and Digital Literacy interns.
This internship can be used for course credit through CAS 4630. 180 hours per semester is the equivalent of 3 credit hours. Students who wish to pursue this option should contact their department chair as early as possible.
NOTE: This role does not require programming expertise. Interns complete Modern Campus CMS training through OU Marketing and Communications before receiving editor access. The role requires someone who can review a webpage, identify what would make it clearer and easier to use, and follow through.

Website Management & CMS:

  • Complete OU Marketing and Communications' Modern Campus (OU Campus) CMS training before receiving editor access
  • Update and maintain content across assigned department websites: news, events, faculty and staff profiles, program and course pages, and announcements
  • Coordinate with department staff to gather content updates and publish them accurately and on time
  • Ensure all published content follows OU brand guidelines: color palette, typography, and image standards
  • Work alongside department student web staff in the departments that have them

Site Audits & User Experience:

  • Audit each assigned department website for outdated content, broken links, navigation
    problems, and page hierarchy
  • Write plain-language findings and a ranked list of fixes for each department, then carry out the fixes
  • Rebuild selected pages so visitors can find key information in fewer clicks, and document each change before and after
  • Design visual assets for department pages, including banners, headers, and featured graphics, within OU brand standards

Accessibility:

  • Check pages against WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards: alt text, heading structure, color
contrast, link text, tables, and posted PDFs
  • Fix accessibility issues in the CMS and document issues that need department action
  • Ensure maintained pages display and work correctly on mobile devices

DFCAS Digital Resource Hub:

  • Build and maintain the structure, page templates, and navigation of the DFCAS Digital Resource Hub (SharePoint)
  • Organize hub content by audience: faculty, staff, and material that can be shared with students
  • Publish and update content supplied by the DFCAS AI and Digital Literacy interns

Department Support:

  • Serve as the web contact for departments in the assigned divisions
  • Answer questions from department staff, walk them through updates, and respond promptly to web requests
  • Write short how-to guides so departments can keep their sites current

Professional Development & Reporting:

  • Track assigned work in Microsoft Planner and keep a log of published changes
  • Attend a weekly team meeting and a weekly check-in with the supervisor
  • Build a professional portfolio of completed work across the year
  • Use the summer to complete larger page rebuilds and prepare department sites for the fall
    semester
  • Present the year's work to the DFCAS Dean's office in December 2027
  • Students taking CAS 4630 complete hour logs, self-evaluations, and a final paper as the course requires

Required Education and Experience:

  • Must be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student in good standing in the Dodge Family College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Oklahoma for the Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 terms, and working through Summer 2027.
  • Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.

Required Attachments:

  • Resume
  • Current OU class schedule (Spring 2027)

Required Skills:

  • Ability to speak, read, and write clear, concise English
  • Highly organized; able to manage requests from several departments and meet deadlines
  • Detail-oriented for accuracy of content, data, and visual presentation
  • Quick to respond and communicate; follows through without reminders
  • Patient, respectful support for faculty and staff with different levels of comfort with technology
  • Able to work collaboratively within a small team

Department Preferences:

  • Experience with a CMS or website builder (Modern Campus/OU Campus, WordPress,
    Squarespace, Wix, or similar)
  • Understanding of layout, visual hierarchy, whitespace, typography, and how people move
    through a website
  • Familiarity with web accessibility standards (WCAG) and mobile-responsive design
  • Experience with design tools such as Canva, Adobe Express, Figma, or Photoshop
  • Experience with SharePoint or Microsoft 365
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS (not required, but helpful)
  • Familiarity with OU brand guidelines or other institutional brand standards
  • Prior experience creating or maintaining a website, even personally or for a student organization
  • Prior customer service or student-facing work experience
  • Interest in earning course credit through CAS 4630
  • Majors in the arts, humanities, or interpretive social sciences are preferred, though students from
    any DFCAS major are welcome
  • Technical skills can be trained, and the CMS is taught through OU Marketing and Communications.

What this role needs is someone who:

  • Looks at a webpage and sees what would make it clearer: layout, content, flow, or navigation
  • Writes and edits carefully for an audience
  • Responds quickly, communicates clearly, and follows through
  • Is patient with faculty and staff who are less comfortable with technology
  • Brings ideas about how the college's websites could work better
